A sad day, one of my heroes has a pop - Marco van Basten slates Hammers
http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/marco-van-basten-slams-west-ham-and-southampton

AC Milan and Holland legend Marco van Basten has slammed the Premier League for its lack of quality and tactics after watching recent games involving West Ham United and Southampton.

Writing for Voetbal International Van Basten said West Ham are one of the richest clubs in Europe, and are challenging for a place in UEFA competition, but their position surprises him because of the quality of their games. Van Basten compared West Ham’s recent performances to that of Southampton’s game with Sunderland in which he said there were no ideas, and technical players like Dusan Tadic and Jordy Clasie struggled to have an impact.

“West Ham United is currently still 5th in the Premier League and is in the top twenty of richest clubs in Europe. But when I look at those games (West Ham v Sunderland), I'm really surprised. At Southampton against Sunderland last Saturday it was really no different. Balls that are shot indiscriminately forward... no one comes up with ideas and takes the initiative. Even players like Dusan Tadic and Jordy Clasie did not succeed,” said Van Basten on the state of English football.

The comments are unlikely to go down well with both clubs, and especially with Southampton coach Ronald Koeman. The two players were teammates of the great Holland team which won Euro88, and the pair played for together for years in the national team. However, some might say Van Basten is diverting attention away from the state of Dutch football at the moment considering they failed to qualify for Euro16, and are no longer producing the talent of past decades.

So it's based on two games where the opposition were managed by fat Sam? I wonder why the quality of football served up was so bad

On the basis of the games he watched, what he said was fair enough.

But on the basis he has only watched that one game of ours, he shouldn't have said it.

Madeasy, sounds like you were worried someone was going to say "cool story, bro"

On the OP, I think Sammy is a good manager, but even I think he's going into games now trying to stifle them and snatch a win or get a draw. Matches against Sunderland probably aren't going to be pretty.

We didn't speak about MVB but thought I would share it as they played in the same team.

As you were

I met Ruud Gullit a couple of years back.

Spent a couple of days with him with work and also had dinner and drinks with him. He was one of my idols growing up and didn't want to meet him as I didn't want him to be a prick.

Very nice guy and has some interesting views on football and modern day footballers.

He only had good things to say about West Ham back then. Did say that the England's World Cup bid was almost arrogant and the team talked as if they deserved to win it and why would they choose anyone else, well we now know that was for money.... but having a debate about it with someone like him was a great conversation to have.

Marco, Marco, Marco.

If you'd been paying attention to West Ham over the last few seasons, instead of one game in isolation, you'd have seen that if we'd put together a 90 min highlights DVD of the entire Allardyce reign, it would probably just have the Play-Off Final.

Now, under Bilic, and with Payet, Lanzini et al, in 3/4 of a season, we'd be complaining about the bits they left out.

That's good enough entertainment for me.

Who the fuck cares what this cunt thinks ? Did he see the games against liverpool, arsenal, chelsea, spurs where we played some brilliant football and controlled the game for most parts.

He's watched two games involving Sunderland. Sounds more like a dig at Allerdyce and his brand of football than a dig at Southampton or West Ham.

The silly cunt.
